Midlothian Castle, locally known as the "Screaming Heads" is something wholly hard to describe, magical and mystical with a bit of creepy and scary mixed in. The art installations that scatter the 310 acre property are the creations of Peter Camani. The massive creations vary from large semi submerged "screaming heads" to animals, and even crashed spaceships! You'll also be serenaded by the local population of Peacocks that roam nearer the castle, adding an eerie ambience to the experience.
The disc golf course on the property meanders in and around the sculptures giving you a great way to both tour around while taking in a game. That said, the property is still a bit of an operating farm that grows tall grasses throughout the summer making it very difficult to play a contiguous round during the high season. Many baskets are removed, holes can be unplayable due to the grass, and getting around can be difficult once you leave the normal hiking/walking trails.
All of that said, in the spring and the fall when the grasses have been cut down, this is one of the premiere courses in the region. Long open bombers, elevation runs, forested holes, tunnel shots, water, this place has it all. Another caveat though is that the baskets are relatively old, tee pads are natural, and depending on when you go, it may be a little rough around the edges. As long as you don't go in with high expectations for the conditions, you won't be disappointed, just take in the scenery and enjoy a day amongst some amazing art and vistas!
